Story of Kecak Dance at Uluwatu Temple

The Kecak Dance was a creation by Wayan Limbak on 1930. He had popularized the dance abroad with Walter Spies, a painter from Germany.

For name, the word of Kecak comes from shouts “Cak! Cak! Cak!” by male dancers.

The dance is unique and different because it is only accompanied the rattles sounds which are tied to feet of dancers, not instrument as others dance.

The Figures in Kecak Dance

The dance is usually staged by a group of 70 dancers which divide into some characters, such as:

1. Rama (the main character)
2. Sita, a Rama’s wife
3. Laksamana, a Rama’s younger brother
4. Jatayu, a Rama’s friend in form of Garuda Bird
5. Hanuman, a commander of the Wanara (Monkey Trooper).
6. Rahwana, an giant king who kidnap Sita

Others will be a group where they will sit in a circle while shouting “Cak! Cak! Cak” as accompanying the dance.

They usually wear traditional attribute in combination among of red, white, and black.
