History of Uluwatu Temple

According to Lontar Kusuma Dewa Pura (ancient library) about History of Uluwatu Temple, it was built on the advice of Mpu Kuturan around the 11th century as one of Sad Kahyangan Jagat (six main temples in Bali).

Five others are Besakih Temple, Lempuyang Luhur Temple, Goa Lawah Temple, Batukaru Luhur Temple and Pusering Jagat Temple.

The existence of Uluwatu Temple is also related to the Tirthayatra Journey of Dang Hyang Dwijendra during the 16th century AD.

He came and did a little development as the existence of Dalem Jurit Temple in the right of Jaba Pura (outer area of temple).

In Dalem Jurit Temple, there are three statues namely the statue of Brahma, Ratu Bagus Dalem Jurit (Shiva Rudra) and Vishnu.

The worship of God through the means of this sculpture was then developed into worship with a Pelinggih Building.
